Water Hoverboarding = eFoiling with Republic Foils

When you think of hoverboarding, I am sure you are taken back to the hoverboard, which was only a reality in Michael J Fox's 1989 film Back to the Future II. A modern-day on-water hoverboard, called eFoils, is the future of water sports. They allow us to access new waves and offshore surf breaks that had never been explored before.

eFoil surfing is an exciting experience and does not require waves to get going. eFoil surfing is somehow like controlled aquaplaning. It's all about gliding effortlessly and smoothly above water. An eFoil is a surfboard with an electric propeller just above the hydrofoil wing, which powers the board to move through any water. The eFoil is powered by a nearly silent electric motor and rechargeable lithium battery. It's controlled by a handheld wireless remote that syncs to the eFoil via Bluetooth.

Our Experience

Upon our arrival to Lake Pleasant, we immediately got started with a tutorial on using the eFoil. David from Republic Foils did an excellent job with being patient and teaching us safety and best technique to feel confident to stand on the eFoil gradually. We were able to try out were the 5'6 Cruiser eFoil and the 6'2 Explorer eFoil. I would highly recommend starting on the 6'2 eFoil, and this board offered more stability. After many attempts, Edgar was able to stand and foil 5'6 Cruiser eFoil. Even though I was hesitant, I did get on and was only comfortable enough to ride on my knees; I stuck with the 6'2 eFoil.

The key to riding the eFoil is balance and speed. If you don't have enough speed and lift the board out of the water, you will stall and fall off. It feels odd how much weight you have to put on the front of the eFoil to keep the nose down. Almost all of your weight is on the front. I found that once I had enough speed, I could find my balance and slowly raise. Steering left and right is similar to longboarding, using your body and weight to turn the eFoil seamlessly.

I would highly recommend the experience to all! David from Republic Foils offers tailored courses for group events or personal lessons.
